Online appointment booking for a doctor's chamber

Phone, WhatsApp, Practo or your own booking page: what each does for a doctor's chamber, what it costs, and who keeps the patient list.

Online appointment booking for a doctor's chamber comes in four forms: the phone and a register, a WhatsApp number, a marketplace app like Practo, or a booking page on your own website. Most chambers end up using two, with their own page for the patients they already have.

Picture a GP's evening chamber in Behala (an example, not a real client). The compounder answers the phone between patients and writes names in a register, and the 7 pm queue still overflows. Here is an honest look at each option, what it costs and who keeps the patient list.

Option 1: the phone and the register

It's free, and every patient understands it. For one doctor with a steady crowd of regulars, it can be enough.

The limits show at busy times. The line is engaged during OPD, nobody answers after closing, and a register can't send a reminder. When the compounder is on leave, the system goes with them.

If you stay with the phone, write your calling hours on the board outside and on your Google listing. Patients then stop trying at 10 pm.

Option 2: a WhatsApp number

Many chambers already take bookings on WhatsApp. Meta describes the WhatsApp Business app as "for small businesses who personally manage conversations with customers" (WhatsApp for Business, as of November 2026).

Its features page lists a business profile with your hours, quick replies, greeting and away messages, and labels to sort chats (WhatsApp Business App Features). An away message tells patients when you'll answer. A label like "Booked Tuesday" helps the receptionist keep track.

What it can't do is stop two patients getting the same time. Someone still reads each chat, checks the register and replies. Keep the chats to timings and fees, as our guide to WhatsApp appointment reminders explains.

Option 3: a marketplace app like Practo

A marketplace is a directory where patients compare many doctors at once. Practo's Kolkata dentist list showed 166 dentists, with fees, patient stories and some listings marked "AD" (Practo, as of November 2026).

For clinics, Practo says that with a Prime subscription a clinic gets a "Book" feature, "which lets patients book appointments online instantly" (Practo for providers). Its Prime page adds that patients get confirmation messages when they book (Practo Prime).

On fees, the Prime page says a one-time platform fee is charged the first time a patient connects with you, within a rolling 180-day window. Repeat appointments in that window aren't charged, the fee is refunded if the patient cancels, and it comes out of a prepaid wallet. The page gives no amounts, so ask Practo for the figures in writing.

Other apps have their own terms. Read each one's own pages, and ask what happens to your profile and patient list if you stop paying.

Option 4: a booking page on your own website

Your own page sits on your own address, such as yourclinic.in/book. It shows only your doctors, and every patient stays in your own list.

Done well, it shows each doctor's real free times, and two patients can never take the same slot. It confirms on WhatsApp straight away, reminds the day before and lets patients change or cancel within your rules. It should also work in Bengali and Hindi.

Put the link where patients already look. Google lets you add a booking link to your Business Profile on Search and Maps (Google Business Profile Help, as of November 2026). Print it as a QR code on your prescription pad too.

The costs are building and running it, which our guide to what a clinic website needs covers. And it won't bring you strangers the way a big directory can.

What the NMC guidelines mean for each option

The NMC's October 2026 guidelines say patient testimonials shall not be used for advertising, and allow claims like "best doctor" only if they can be objectively verified. They also aim to prevent solicitation of patients (Medical Dialogues, as of November 2026).

  • Your own page: stick to facts, such as doctors, qualifications, days, fees and address.
  • WhatsApp: send booking messages, not offers or discount broadcasts.
  • A marketplace: don't copy its patient stories onto your own website or pad.

What to ask before you choose

Take these to Practo, any other app, or any agency, including us.

  1. Who keeps the patient list, and can I download it?
  2. What does it cost per month and per booking? Get it in writing.
  3. Can patients pick a doctor and see only that doctor's free times?
  4. Do reminders go out on their own, and can patients cancel from them?
  5. If I stop, what happens to my profile and my booking link?

If no-shows are your real problem, start with reminders and an easy cancel. For long procedures, a small booking amount helps too, as our guide to UPI deposits explains.
